The ITLOS decision regarding the prompt release of the ‘Arctic Sunrise’ by Russia

ITLOS has handed down some provisional measures in the case of the Russian detention of the Arctic Sunrise and her crew. A background of the situation can be found here. I’m not going to provide an analysis of the provisional measures because Craig H. Allen has already done that here. Go have a read.

The short story is that Russia has been ordered to release the Arctic Sunrise and her crew, with their detention constituting an internationally wrongful act. What Russia will actually do in the wake of this judgment given that it has already stated that it will not recognise the jurisdiction of ITLOS in this matter.
